I planned to create a nice big post with dozens of icebreaker ideas you could choose from. So I have scrapped my plan to curate good icebreakers from the Internet. In my own classrooms, with middle school, high school, and college students, I have played all three of these games with great success.

Gibbs Flips Algebra 1. I discovered task cards a few years ago. I was amazed at their effectiveness. Students who will shut down understandably at a worksheet of 20 problems will happily get a comparable amount of practice working one problem at a time, particularly if they can work with a partner and check their answers as they go hurray for QR codes!
I was just never sure how to make it work for ME. I tried speed-math-ing with my Pre-Algebra kids first. My two collaborative, inclusion Pre-Algebra classes are small, so I set up two sets of 8 desks in the room. One reason I decided on two sets was to allow for a bit of differentiation; students in these classes work at vastly different speeds, and splitting them up would allow students to work at a pace comfortable for them. A couple of days after Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 did the same activity with the same cards.
I started with a brief, probably inaccurate, description of speed-dating and added that we were were calling it speed-MATH-ing.

What makes a great teacher great? The faded oil town is easy to miss. Fewer than 3, people live there, and the highway humps right around it. There are no stoplights, no movie theater and no bowling alley anymore. Just a clutch of small houses and hearty businesses: a funeral home, Family Dollar and a Dollar General.

I am going to ask students to pick up a card as they enter class. Students will become an expert on the problem that they choose, so I want students to be able to pick a problem that they feel is accessible. Them, students have 10 minutes to solve their problem and become an expert on how to explain the solution process to someone else. During this period, they can ask anyone for help.
After ten minutes they will need to be the expert on the problem. The answers are copied on the back of the card so that students can check their work. I may review with students for a moment to make sure they recall how to find the area and perimeter of a rectangle.
Discussions are the cornerstone of my teaching style. We end up with the same speakers sharing their strongly held opinions while the rest of the class sits with glazed eyes. One set of students stays sitting in chairs while the other group rotates around. When the buzzer rings, they move on. There is a small amount of prep that goes into this. First, I created an overview sheet that explained the concept to my students and included a graphic organizer for them to fill out to give them some accountability.

Wow, you really do such a great job with the older kids!! Angela The Daily Alphabet. Thank-you so much, Angela!
Even now, many students seem to crave the passivity of copying down notes from lectures. My first attempt was with function transformation in 11th grade, using the cards from Cheesemonkey SF. My classroom is crammed full of mismatched tables rather than desks, so I asked my 12th advisory to create a long table setup at the end of their class.
I made these directions based on the original blog post and went through them with the students ahead of time. Solve and become the expert on that problem for the day. If you have a question, ask your speed dating partner. The student on the end that gets bumped off circles around to the other end. The whole process proceeded somewhat awkwardly. I ended up with an odd number of students, so I pulled one student who had been flying through the topic to be an answer-checker with me for step 2.
Some similarly bright students finished their problems before I even finished reading the directions out loud, while others had to be prodded multiple times to start. Having the answer-checker helped, but we had trouble maneuvering around the huge table formation and keeping track of whom we had checked. I would like my students to be self-sufficient enough to do well with this structure, but we have some work to do. I tried this again with my 12th grade math classes a few days later.

Weinberg and Moussawi collaborated with the other faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course to explore how students could give and receive higher quality peer feedback on team presentations. They compared two different presentation approaches. Next, teams changed pairings, and the process repeated.
Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher. According to the surveys, students reported giving and receiving more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions compared to sessions with serial, class-wide presentations. Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions.

I use speed dating in my German 2 class to practice past participles. It’s kind of like walking flash cards. It works quite well, but one problem I run into is that students don’t necessarily “date” all of the possible past participles if they just move around the room randomly. Do you have this problem, or are your classes small enough that it isn’t an issue? Last time I tried a more organized setup where students formed two concentric circles and one circle rotated to find a new date.
Just wondering if you have this issue too? When I do it, I tell them that they can’t date the same question they have already seen. Since they are switching cards, they can date the same person multiple times, but not the same question. I also call myself the matchmaker. When ever someone seems to be slow to pair up, I pair them with someone else.
You could also try telling them that they need to have a specified number of dates. As far as the concentric circles, you can split the class in two and tell one group to form a circle. Once that is done, tell the remaining group to go stand in front of someone in the circle.

At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner. The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak,
